 Birthways Lamaze Classes

Here’s an ad for Birthways Lamaze Classes. The text reads: Lamaze classes begin Jan 20th. Call 416 386 1817 before it’s too late. Birthways.

Get it? A baby’s first view of the world, on the way into it.

I’m not sure what I think of this ad. On the one hand, it got me to stop, look, and think — presumably the goal of all advertising. And I’ll definitely remember it. On the other hand, it’s a little shocking. But why is that? Is it the implied vagina in the photo? (We’ll see what search engine spiders make of this post with the body references lying thick on the ground!) I mean, we were all born — it should be one of the most natural images in the world. And yet, one of the comments on Ads of the World is “Hate to say this … I’m eating my lunch!!! ahhhh make it stop … !” Giving birth is painful, amazing, life-changing, and sometimes gross, but the idea of it shouldn’t be nauseating.

What do you think? Does this ad work for you?

  1. I confess that I am baffled by the coffee cup. Is she lying on the floor to deliver this baby? And where is she, a hospital? Because lying on the floor in a hospital is SUCH a bad idea. Isn’t the baby going to hit the coffee cup? Shouldn’t someone move her/the cup? Do we really need the newborn to be covered in coffee?

I guess the ad is working, because I am spending a LOT of time pondering it.

  2. I took the coffee cup as an innocent bystander was there, saw what was going on, and rushed for help. Hmmm, perhaps I was reading too much into it?
