Football is not my game

September 28, 2007

My brother, B, walks into the room where I am sitting. A football game is on TV.

B: Who’s winning?

Me: I don’t know.

B: What quarter is it?

Me: I’m not sure.

B: Are you even watching this game?

Me: I was, but I got too distracted by the numbers on the Ravens’ uniform. Look at them — they’re hideous! They’re all bad, but the 3 and the 5 are the absolute worst! I almost had to change the channel!

B: Are you kidding?

Me: Of course not! Bad typography isn’t funny.

Pause.

B: You need a vacation.

  1. LT, I think your brother may be right. But this is a funny story. I tend to drive Jim nuts by critiquing the outfits. Football is the one place besides Halloween where you see that much bright orange, and really, it is a color better left to the pumpkins.

  2. Sports in general has a really specific design aesthetic. When it’s good, it can be very good. Here’s the Hartford Whalers logo from 1992-1997 (ice hockey).

Isn’t it fab? Excellent use of negative space to first define the H, then to define the whale tail.
However, when it’s bad, it can be horrid, and often is.

  4. It’s good to know I’m not the only designer who gets distracted by bad typography.
